Viv Martin: studio work

Ancient Stones

This project has been part of my work for several years and is not yet set out in project form but is definitely an emerging body of work.

I have made drawings of ancient stones for many years. The earliest were in Stonehenge, when you could still walk amongst the stones. More recently I have made many visits to Carnac in Brittany and the rich resource of prehistoric remains in that area.

I made a woodcut that captured some of the relationships between stones that I had become so aware of in Carnac amongst the fields of standing stones. The sense of stones as morphing into people is very strong and the relationships between them appear to set up conversations.

This is the beginning of a body of work that I am sure will soon be further developed.
